- Most driveshaft problems are repairable. You rarely need a whole new assembly.
- Dealers usually replace the complete driveshaft, while a driveshaft shop can rebuild yours.
- Fixing a squeaky u-joint early costs far less than fixing what a failed one breaks.
- Bringing in just the shaft (removed) can cut labor costs.
National price ranges
Published 2026 cost guides put a complete driveshaft replacement at roughly $400 to $2,100 installed, with parts at about $150 to $900 and labor at about $250 to $1,200. Two-piece shafts, CV shafts, AWD vehicles and OEM-only parts push toward the top of that range. These are national averages, and your quote will depend on your vehicle and what's actually worn.
What each repair involves (cheapest to most expensive)
| Job | What's involved | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Re-balance | Clean, inspect, spin-balance, add weights | $ |
| U-joint replacement | Press out old joints, install new, re-balance | $ |
| Center support bearing | Separate two-piece shaft, press bearing, re-phase, balance | $–$$ |
| Slip yoke / spline repair | New slip yoke or spline set, balance | $$ |
| Shorten or lengthen | Cut, re-weld, true and balance | $$ |
| CV / double cardan rebuild | Rebuild kit, centering ball, balance | $$ |
| Retube | New tube, reuse good yokes, weld, balance | $$–$$$ |
| New custom driveshaft | Built to your measurements in steel, aluminum or chromoly | $$$ |
What changes the price
- One-piece vs two-piece. Two-piece shafts have more joints and a center bearing.
- U-joint series. 1350 and 1410 parts cost more than 1310. See u-joint series explained.
- Material. Steel costs the least. Aluminum and chromoly cost more. See materials compared.
- CV joints. Double cardan shafts cost more to build and rebuild.
- Labor to remove and install. Simple on most RWD trucks, harder on some AWD cars and exhaust-crowded chassis.
- Dealer vs specialist. Dealers typically swap the whole assembly with a factory part. A driveshaft shop can usually rebuild the one you have.
Repair or replace?
Repair when the tube is straight, the yokes are in good shape and the shaft is the right length. Replacing u-joints, a center bearing or a slip yoke and re-balancing brings it back to like new.
Replace or build new when the tube is bent or twisted, the yokes are damaged, you've added a lot of power, you've changed the length (lift, swap), or you're upgrading to a CV, aluminum or chromoly shaft.
5 ways to save money
- Fix it early. A squeaky u-joint is cheap. A failed one can wreck the yokes, the transmission seal and the shaft.
- Bring just the shaft. On many rear-drive trucks, removing the shaft is a few bolts at the pinion, and then it slides out of the transmission. Mark the orientation first.
- Rebuild, don't replace. Ask a driveshaft shop before you buy a complete assembly.
- Buy the right part once. If you keep breaking u-joints, step up a series instead of replacing the same weak part again.
- Combine jobs. If the shaft is coming out for a u-joint, have it balanced and inspected at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a driveshaft?
National 2026 estimates run roughly $400 to $2,100 installed for a complete driveshaft, depending on the vehicle, shaft type and labor. Many problems can be repaired for much less than a full replacement.
Is it worth repairing a driveshaft?
Usually, yes. If the tube is straight and the yokes are good, replacing u-joints or the center bearing and re-balancing restores the shaft for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Why is the dealer quote so high?
Dealers typically replace the entire driveshaft assembly with a factory part. A driveshaft specialist can often rebuild your existing shaft instead.
Can I replace a driveshaft myself?
On many rear-wheel-drive trucks it's a basic bolt-in job if you support the vehicle safely and mark the shaft's orientation. Building, repairing and balancing the shaft itself takes specialized equipment.
How do I get a driveshaft quote in the Edmond / OKC area?
Call or text Drivetrain Industries at (572) 568-1838 with your year, make, model and symptoms, or send photos of the shaft for a quote.
