Signs your driveshaft needs attention
A driveshaft problem rarely fixes itself. It gets louder and more expensive the longer you drive on it. Bring it in if you notice any of these:
- Vibration that gets worse with speed, usually felt through the floor or seat between 45 and 75 mph.
- A clunk when you shift into drive or reverse, or when you get on and off the throttle.
- A chirp or squeak at low speed that follows wheel speed, the classic sign of a dry u-joint.
- Rust-colored dust around the u-joint caps, which means the needle bearings are wearing out.
- A shudder on takeoff, often a worn center support bearing on a two-piece shaft or driveline angles that are out of spec.
Symptom, likely cause and fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration at highway speed | Shaft out of balance, lost balance weight, bent tube | Inspect, straighten or retube, re-balance |
| Clunk on shifting | Worn u-joint, worn slip yoke splines | Replace u-joints and/or slip yoke |
| Squeak at low speed | Dry or worn u-joint | U-joint replacement |
| Shudder on acceleration | Center bearing, driveline angles | New center bearing, angle correction |
| Vibration after a lift or drop | Wrong length or operating angle | Shorten/lengthen, CV conversion, re-balance |
Custom rebuild & modification work
- U-joint replacement and series upgrades, from 1310 through 1550, heavy duty 1610 through SPL250, and industrial series
- CV / double cardan joint rebuilds
- New tubing for bent, dented or twisted shafts, or a material upgrade (steel, aluminum or chromoly)
- Slip yokes, tube yokes, weld yokes, flange yokes and splines
- Center support bearings on two-piece shafts
- Shortening and lengthening after lifts, drops, and transmission or rear-end swaps
- Balancing for shafts we build and for shafts from other shops
Why balancing matters
In overdrive, your driveshaft can spin faster than the engine. At that speed even a small imbalance becomes a vibration you feel through the whole truck, and over time it wears out u-joints, transmission seals and pinion bearings. Every shaft we build or repair is balanced before it leaves the shop, so it runs smooth through your whole speed range.
Repair or replace?
If the tube is straight and the yokes are good, rebuilding is usually the most economical fix. If the tube is bent or twisted, or you've added power the shaft was never built for, a new custom driveshaft is often the better investment. We'll tell you which makes sense before we start work.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a driveshaft rebuild cost in Edmond?
It depends on what's worn and what you want changed. A u-joint replacement and balance costs far less than a new driveshaft, while a retube or custom build costs more. Call (572) 568-1838 with your vehicle and symptoms for a quote.
Is it safe to drive with a bad u-joint?
No. A failing u-joint can let the driveshaft drop, which can damage the transmission, the fuel and brake lines, or the floor pan, and can cause a loss of control. Get it checked as soon as you hear a clunk or squeak.
Do I need to bring the whole vehicle in?
Not always. For repair and balancing you can remove the driveshaft and bring in just the shaft. Mark how it lines up with the yokes before you remove it. If you're not sure what's causing a vibration, call first.
Can you rebuild or modify a driveshaft built by another shop?
Yes. We can inspect, rebuild, modify and balance driveshafts from other builders and factory shafts. Every job is custom to your vehicle.
Why does my truck vibrate after a lift kit?
A lift changes the driveshaft's length and operating angles. That usually needs a shaft that's been lengthened, a CV double cardan shaft, a slip yoke eliminator, or angle correction at the pinion.
